The Dilts Pyramid of Logical Levels (DPLL)

Today we will talk about famous coaching instrument.  It is called A Pyramid of Logical Levels or The Dilts Pyramid.Today we will talk about famous coaching instrument. It is called A Pyramid of Logical Levels or The Dilts Pyramid.

This is very effective exercise in situations where you need a comprehensive look at your goal. It can also be used when you feel that you are stuck or you are lack of self-confidence.

Everything is very simple. You need to answer honestly to the questions of the pyramid - first gradually climbing up its steps, and then, moving in the reverse (downwards) direction.

There are 6 logical levels:

  • 1. The Environment Level (the first level). Provides an answer to the question «Where?».

Answer to yourself when you plan to reach the goal, where it will be, who will be next to you (relatives, customers, colleagues, etc.)

  • 2. The Behavior Level. Provides an answer to the question “What am I doing?”.

What steps will you take when you reach your goal? What will you do in the environment that was mentioned earlier?

  • 3. The Capability Level. Provides an answer to the question «How»?

What skills and abilities do you need to have to achieve the goal? Which of them do you already have, and which ones need to be improved?

  • 4. The Values Level. Provides an answer to the question “Why is it so important?”.

What important and valuable things will you get by achieving this goal? Why are your new skills and experience valuable to your life? How will your life change when you reach the goal?

  • 5. The Identity Level. Provides an answer to the question «Who?»

What will you become if you reach your goal? What will you say to yourself when the goal is achieved?

  • 6. The Mission Level. Provides an answer to the question “For whom?”

Who is interested in meeting your goal? Who will be happy to benefit from your achieved target?

After answering all these questions, we go down to the same levels.

Will those I do it for be satisfied?

What will I get from it?

What abilities will I have?

What will I do?

When and where will it all happen?
