The Six Step Reframe Technique

The Six Step Reframe Technique is one of the most famous and interesting techniques of NLP.

This is a universal technique for creating options for more effective behavior.

The author of this technique is John Grinder. This pattern John found, like all ingenious things, quite by accident. John got very sick when he was at work in a psychiatric hospital St. Paul in Vancouver and he instructed his subconscious to do his best and promised to go to bed after work and recover from illness.

According to the legend, everything went at the highest level, although D. Grinder did not remember how and with whom he worked that day. And here's what he wrote on the board:

Reframe

  • Specify which forms of behavior should be changed.

  • Establish a reliable involuntary alarm system with the subconscious.

  • Verify that there is some positive intention behind the behavior to be changed.

  • Create a package of alternatives that can satisfy this positive intent just as well, or better than the original behavior.

  • Put the responsibility for fulfillment on the subconscious.

  • Perform an ecology check.

Description of the Technique

1. Behavior or Pattern

Determine the behavior of the "X" that you want to change. Behavior can be external (for example, lip biting, unconscious swinging foot) or internal (for example, somatic stomach ulcer, weight gain).

Call it any letter, number, color («Y», three, blue) but don’t try to make any sense of it.

2. Contact with the subconscious, with a part of personality

Establish contact with the part of the personality that is responsible for this behavior and ask it the following question: "Does a part of me that manages X behavior want to communicate with me in mind?" After asking this question, stay for a while in a state of internal expectation, note and fix any changes in the sensations, visual images or sounds that appear in response to your question. Be attentive to any manifestations of the reactions of all representative systems. Thank the part of your personality for your cooperation.

a) Set the "Yes" and "No" signals. Test the answers of this part, asking questions that require an unambiguous "yes" or "no" answers, so that you can accurately distinguish these signals. At this time, it is useful for the operator to calibrate the external indicators of responses.

b) Give the name of this part: Does the part that is responsible for the behavior of X agree to be called A?

3. The positive intention of the part

Determine the intention of part A. Ask it maybe this part would like to let you know that it is doing something useful for you using X's behavior. After this question again stay in the state of internal expectation to notice the answer "yes" or "no".

a) If you get the answer "Yes", ask this part to find out the positive intent of its behavior in the mind, then continue with the 4th step.

B). If the answer is "No", proceed immediately with the next step.

4. Alternative behaviors

Create new behaviors that can satisfy / implement the intent. Immerse yourself in your inner creative part and ask it for help.

 - Does the creative part agree to help part A to find new behaviors? Ask it to create 10, 20 ... or maybe 100 alternative behaviors that would be good at satisfying the positive intent of part A that is responsible for the behavior of X. Ask part A to inform you about new alternative opportunities from the creative part. Thank part X for her help.

4.1. Choice of 3 variants of behavior

At the subconscious level, part A reports its intention to the creative part and chooses 3 new behaviors that are appropriate and effective for satisfying intent A. Every time the selection is made, a "Yes" signal is given.

- And now I would like part A to inform about its intention to the creative part. And it would start creating new

behaviors and part A would choose ones that are more effective than X.

5. Ecology check of Acceptance of New Options

Ask the part you worked with, this time to keep calm and be silent. Then ask yourself if there are any parts that want to participate in these negotiations. Be in a state of internal expectation of any reaction.

- Are there any parts of my personality that object to 3 new chosen behaviors?

If "Yes": - Let all the parts that have anything against the three new behaviors report their intentions to the creative part, and it begins to come up with new behaviors instead of X that satisfy the intentions of both part A and all these parts. Part A chooses the three variants that will be more effective than X. After choosing each option, please say "Yes."

- Are there any parts of my personality that object to these three new chosen behaviors?

And continue these actions to reach an agreement.

If the answer is "no" and you haven’t received any signals, it means that reframe is completed. If you got any reaction, then ask if it is a greeting and joy because of new behaviors that were taken by the part responsible for the behavior of X. If it is "yes" and the reaction is repeated, it means that reframe is completed.

6. Responsibility

Then ask part A to assume responsibility for using the new behaviors chosen for it in the relevant contexts.

- Does part A agree to take responsibility for using three new behaviors instead of X, considering that they are more effective?

If it is not, then you can ask her to take the responsibility for trying these new behaviors instead of X for a month (weeks, three months).

Thank Part A for making a choice.

Having made the final ecology check, carry out the adjustment to the future.

Questions for clarifying intentions

  • Why do you need it?

  • What it will bring to you?

  • If you get it, what will you be aiming for next?

  • What is more important to you than this?

There is no limit to perfection.  Develop the best qualities in yourself.
